Troubleshooting Scenario: OSPF Area Mismatch

Network Topology (OSPF Area 0) Simulation Overview

Status: OSPF Area Mismatch on Router_A! Hello Packets Rejected at Core Router.

Router Console - Local Router (Router_A)
Router_A> enable Router_A#

What is OSPF?

Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) based on the Link-State routing algorithm. It uses Dijkstra's Shortest Path First (SPF) algorithm to calculate the most efficient loop-free path to every destination network. OSPF operates inside Autonomous Systems (AS), converges rapidly, supports Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR), and uses multicast IP traffic (224.0.0.5 and 224.0.0.6) for routing updates.

OSPF Scenario Details

Scenario: Router_A is physically connected to Core_Router but fails to form an OSPF Neighbor Adjacency.

Possible Cause: Router_A interface is accidentally configured under OSPF Area 10 instead of Area 0 (Backbone Area), causing Hello packet drops.

IP Address Scheme & Area Configuration

Device Interface IP Configured OSPF Area Neighbor Status
Router_A10.1.1.2/24Area 10 (Misconfigured)Init / Down
Core_Router10.1.1.1/24 & 172.16.1.1/24Area 0 (Backbone)Init / Down

Supported CLI Commands

Verification Commands: show ip ospf neighbor, show running-config

Configuration Steps:

  • config terminal (Enter configuration mode)
  • router ospf 1 (Enter OSPF process mode)
  • no network 10.1.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 10 (Remove invalid area)
  • network 10.1.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 0 (Assign correct backbone area)
