What is BGP?

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the core routing protocol of the global Internet. It is a standardized Path Vector Protocol designed to exchange routing and reachability information among Autonomous Systems (AS) across the world. Unlike Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs like OSPF or EIGRP), BGP scales across millions of routes and makes routing decisions based on network policies, path attributes, and rule sets rather than technical metrics like hop count or bandwidth.

BGP Scenario Details

Scenario: End-User Router is physically connected to the ISP Router via Fiber Link but cannot reach Cloud Server networks.

Possible Cause: BGP neighbor configuration is missing on the End-User Router while ISP Router (AS 10001) and Cloud Server Router (AS 30003) have established peering.

Autonomous System (AS) & IP Scheme

Device Autonomous System Interface IP Address BGP Status
End-User RouterAS 20002192.168.1.2/24Unconfigured (Down)
ISP RouterAS 10001192.168.1.1/24 & 10.0.0.1/24Configured (Active)
Core Server RouterAS 3000310.0.0.2/24Configured (Active)

Supported CLI Commands

Verification Commands: show ip bgp summary, show running-config

Configuration Steps:

  • config terminal (Enter configuration mode)
  • router bgp 20002 (Enable BGP process for AS 20002)
  • neighbor 192.168.1.1 remote-as 10001 (Form BGP neighbor relationship with ISP Router)
